Spring Safety | Sliding Glass Doors
Sliding glass doors make for a lovely way to usher in the beautiful weather April brings. While these doors were installed to better take in the scenery and make homes feel more connected with the outdoors, they do also bring about some potential dangers.
First of all, and this is a no-brainer, but it should be said- Don’t leave your doors open if you’re not in the room. Criminals actually seek out the easiest opportunities to snatch a few valuables here and there, and you’re giving them an easy in.
Secondly, keep your doors in good shape. This means taking the proper precautions when it comes to locks, deadbolts, bars, and proper glass. If you need to have any of these reinforced, now is the time to do so. There are even special films designed to make break ins more difficult. Now would also be a good time to have a home alarm installed, or at the very least give the illusion that one is present with the simple addition of a sticker to your window. As the temperatures become more pleasant, crime is statistically bound to increase.
“If you plot crime and temperature together you get a straight line up,” said Dr. Scott Sheridan, the Kent State University professor who co-wrote the Cleveland study. “Some of the reason is increase in aggressive behavior, but a lot of it has to do with more people interacting with each other when the weather is warmer.”
Lastly, ensure that your house doesn’t become a target in the first place. Keep your bushes trimmed, your lightbulbs fresh, and your mail and trash schedule normal. Your home should never look unoccupied.
“It often starts with a doorbell ring or a knock at the front door. If no one answers, burglars take that as an invitation to find their way in through one of the most vulnerable entry points of any home: sliding-glass doors. Many homeowners don’t realize that what they might consider to be an adequate barrier to protect their families and possessions is “just a piece of glass” waiting to be shattered, said Orlando Police Department Cpl. Kevlon Kirkpatrick.”
Take an afternoon to get your sliding glass doors in tip-top shape- you won’t regret it!
