Basic Safety Suggestions

  • Hire C.A.U.S.E. Certified Businesses.

  • Do not hesitate to say “No” if you do not feel safe when the worker arrives.
  • Be Aware & Be Safe!
  • It is always a good idea to have another adult in the house when any kind of service is to be done in or around your home.  Invite a friend over for coffee.
  • Your children are not protection.  You are actually more vulnerable if you are alone with small children because your attacker might threaten you with the life of your child if you don’t do what he wants.
  • If the company you are contacting is not C.A.U.S.E. Certified, ask them if they do pre-hiring criminal background checks. If not, don’t use them.  Tell them why you will not be using their company and find one that does criminal background checks on all service workers.
  • Beware of inappropriate questions from the service worker in your home.  “You have to watch how seemingly innocent conversation can actually be accumulating intelligence” per Jeff McKissack, Defense By Design.
Examples:”I’m new in town…you look like you work out at a gym.  Where do you go? I always have a hard time finding a good time to go when it’s not busy.  Have you found a good time to go?”

“I noticed you have a few kids.  My wife and I have 3 small children and are always looking for new parks to go to.  Do you have a favorite?”
